How it came about.Once there was a teacher who was also a book collector. How sad is that? He dreamt of earning a living getting up late, doing what he liked and handling books. One day he came across a book of great price, in fact several, but woe they were buried among a load of dross in an auction. Verily he girded his wallet and bought the lot, yea even unto the Readers Digest condensed garbage, and large numbers of AA guides of the UK (1970's vintage). He took the books of great price and added them to his collection, then did look upon the 20 boxes of 1980's children's annuals, Catherine Cooksons (BCA of course) etc and he did weep bitterly. Also there was no room to move in the lounge and the 4 cats had started to use them to great, but insanitary, purpose.
Then one day a great flash of inspiration came unto him, and he cried out "I will take these things from this place unto another place called Amazon, and I will peddle this stuff in the firmament". And much to his surprise it did shift like the proverbial off of a shovel. Well the good stuff did, but not the Readers Digests and their ilk for he was but a prophet, and only God could sell such things, at a push.
And so the teacher cast off some of his pedagogical ways and went part-time, and did rejoice on Amazon and ABE, and Still Water Books arose in the chaos. In a few years the books he had amassed spilt over his abode and he needed extra space. Finally the teacher was no more a teacher, but the internet bookseller you see before you.
And the cats looked upon it and were very pleased.
